Varva

Privacy

Your rides are recorded and kept on your iPhone. There's no account, no ads and no tracking. Varva only sends something off your phone in the cases below, and each one says exactly what.

What stays on your phone

Everything Varva records: your routes, lean, speed and the rest of each ride, its name, rating and notes, and the bike's details if you connect one. It's kept in Varva's own storage on your iPhone, and is part of your iPhone's backup like any app's data. Photos stay in your photo library; Varva only looks at which were taken during a ride, and only if you let it.

What leaves your phone

Maps and place names: Apple

Maps are Apple Maps. To name a ride after where you went, Varva asks Apple which towns a ride passed. Apple handles these under its own privacy policy.

Weather: Open-Meteo

The Ride tab shows the temperature, rain and daylight where you are. For the weather, Varva sends Open-Meteo your position rounded to about a kilometre, and nothing else.

Comparing corners with other riders, if you choose to

Only if you pick Compare with others (Settings → Learn from other riders). It's off until you turn it on. Then, for each corner you ride, Varva sends:

Never your route, a ride, the time of day, your name or anything that identifies your phone. Each corner gets a different code for you, so your corners can't be tied together or back to you. Other riders only ever see a corner's averages, and only once five different riders have ridden it. Turning the setting off stops sending. Since nothing links the numbers to you, they can't be found again to delete.

Sharing a ride, when you tap Share Link

Varva uploads the ride to varva.app so the link works in any browser: its name, date, distance, riding time, top speed, the route, a profile of speed and elevation along it, and its peaks (top speed, max lean, hardest acceleration and braking). Apple draws the map picture from the route. Anyone with the link can see it; the page isn't listed anywhere and tells search engines to stay away. Stop Sharing Link in the ride's menu deletes it from varva.app.

Varva signs each upload with a key Apple vouches for (App Attest), so varva.app only takes rides from the real app on an iPhone. varva.app keeps the key's public half, to check the signatures, and nothing alongside it.

A shared ride shows the whole route, start and end included, which can be close to where you live.

Reporting a shared ride

A report keeps what the reporter types in the form, and nothing else.

varva.app

Like any website, varva.app sees the IP address of each visit, to deliver the page and to allow at most ten uploads a minute from one address or one phone. Varva doesn't store IP addresses. The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics.

The bike

With a Yamaha connected, Varva reads the bike's data over Bluetooth, using the link Yamaha's MyRide app sets up. It goes into your ride on your phone, and nowhere else.

Questions and requests

Write to hello@varva.app. As there are no accounts, what Varva holds about you is the rides you've shared, which you can remove yourself, and anything you write to us.
